# History

Entz keeps a document's versions as it changes. See the document as it was at an earlier moment, and bring an older version back as a copy.

Looking back changes nothing. An older version comes back, when you want it, as a new document beside the one you have, and the document you are working in stays as it is.

## Open the history

Choose **History…** from the three-dot **Document menu** in the document's header. The **History** sheet lists the document's versions, newest first, with their number under its title, such as **48 versions**. Each row gives the date and time of a version and how long ago that was.

The list shows twenty versions at a time. **Older versions**, at its end, says how many more there are and brings the next twenty.

## Look at a version

Press a version. A card above the list shows its date and time and the first lines of the document as it was then. A block without words shows as its kind: **[drawing]**, **[image]** or **[table]**. When the document was empty at that version, the card says **Nothing in the document at this version.**

## Restore as a copy

With a version chosen, press **Restore as a copy**. Entz makes a new document from that version, named after the document with the version's date and time in brackets, and opens it. The original stays as it is: copy what you want back from the copy, paste it into the original, and delete the copy once you no longer need it.

The copy is a document of your own, so anyone who can open a document, a reader too, can restore one of its versions this way.

## What a version is

- A version is a moment when the document changed. Edits one person makes close together, within about a minute, count as one.
- The sheet lists at most 200 versions. In a longer history they are spread evenly across it, and the newest is always there.
- The list says when, not who. Edits by other people, by agents over MCP ([How agents edit](/docs/mcp/editing/)) and by the built-in assistant ([The assistant](/docs/assistant/)) sit among yours, by their time.
- A change from before Entz recorded times shows as **Before times were kept**.
- Each tab of a document has a history of its own ([Tabs](/docs/tabs/)).

Undo is separate from the history: it steps back through your own recent edits ([Writing and formatting](/docs/writing/)).

## Where the history comes from

A document that syncs keeps its whole history, on the server and on your device, so the sheet shows the same versions on every device you sign in on. A document opened from this device's copy, signed out or offline, has no history from before that opening: its list starts when you opened it ([Offline and sync](/docs/sync/)).

A history that grows far larger than the document itself, for example after very large pastes that were deleted again, is folded after a pause in your editing, and the versions from before the fold are gone. The sheet's note under its title says so: **A version from before the last fold of the history is no longer held.**
