# The library

Every document you have as a grid of page previews, with favourites first, a search, and the New menu for blank documents, imported files and shared links.

The **Documents** tab is your library: every document on this device and, when you are signed in, every document you belong to on the server ([Offline and sync](/docs/sync/)). **Settings** is the other tab.

## The grid

Each document is a card: three a row where they fit, two on a phone. A card shows a miniature of the document's first page (headings larger, lists with their markers, code in a monospace font, a grey box for a drawing or an image, a small grid for a table), its title, and a line such as **Edited 5 min ago**. Press a card to open the document at its top, with the caret in its first block.

Favourites come first, then the documents you worked in most recently.

A document you belong to on the server but have never opened on this device says **On the server, not opened here yet**, and is an **Untitled document** with an empty page until you open it. A new blank document, and one that came from the server, takes its title from its first heading (or its first line of text) until you rename it; an imported file keeps the file's name.

A document's tabs are not cards of their own: the document is, and its tabs open from the strip above it ([Tabs](/docs/tabs/)).

### Favourites

The star at the top right of a card makes the document a favourite. On the web, an outline star appears while the pointer is over the card; click it (**Add to favourites**), and a favourite's star stays filled until you click it again (**Remove from favourites**). On a phone, tap the card's top right corner: the star shows once the document is a favourite.

Favourites belong to this device and do not sync.

## Search

Once the library holds more than three documents, a **Search documents** field sits above the grid, and the grid narrows as you type. It matches the titles and the text of the documents saved on this device, each word on its own and without regard to case. Clear the field to see everything again.

A document you belong to but have never opened on this device has nothing saved here to match. While you are online the search also asks the server, but the server keeps no searchable text for documents made in Entz, so open such a document once to find it by its words.

## New

**New…** in the bar at the top of the web page, or at the top right of **Documents** on a phone, and the round **+** button at the bottom right of the library, open the same menu:

| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| **Blank document** | Makes a new document, a heading for its title and a paragraph under it, and opens it with the caret in the heading. |
| **Import files…** | Opens the system's file picker for Markdown, HTML, Typst, plain text and `.ent` files. Each file becomes a document named after it. One file opens at once; several stay in the library, and a notice says how many came in ([Import and export](/docs/import-export/)). |
| **Open by id…** | Asks for a **Document id or link** and opens that document: the way to open a link someone sent you, whatever device it came from ([Sharing and access](/docs/sharing/)). |

On the web you can also drop files anywhere on the library page. While you drag them over it, the page says **Drop files to import them: Markdown, HTML, Typst, Entz or plain text**.

## A card's menu

The three-dot **Document menu** button at the right of a card's title opens its menu. It opens from that button only: there is no right-click or long-press menu on a card.

| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| **Open** | Opens the document. |
| **Rename** | Asks for the new **Title**; **Rename** keeps it. From then on the title stays as you set it, on this device: other devices, and other people, name the document by its first heading. |
| **Make a copy** | Makes a new document of your own, called **Copy of** and the title, from the document as last saved on this device. The copy has the words and blocks, not the comments, the history, the tabs or the people. |
| **Copy link** | Copies the document's link and says **Link copied** ([Sharing and access](/docs/sharing/)). |
| **Access…** | Opens the sheet of who the link lets in and who has the document. |
| **Delete** | Asks, then deletes the document: from this device, and for everyone when you own it and are online ([Deleting a document](/docs/sharing/#deleting-a-document)). |

An open document has the same menu, under the three dots in its header, without **Open** and with **History…** ([History](/docs/history/)), **Comments…** ([Comments](/docs/comments/)) and, for people who can edit while online, **Add tab…**. There, **Make a copy** opens the copy. To copy a document as Markdown, open it and use **Copy as Markdown** in its header.

## The first launch

A new library starts with three documents: **Welcome to entz**, a tour of the editor; **How it works**, what is under the page; and **Syncing & collaboration**. They are ordinary documents, yours to edit or delete.
